Emma and Regina: From Frenemies to Friends
Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Regina's (Lana Parrilla) relationship has endured many ups and downs on Once Upon a Time, but as time has gone on, their association has evolved from enemies to frenemies to actual friends. They have come a long way since their first meeting and their friendship has become one of the most beloved relationships in Storybrooke.
Here are 7 key moments that has shaped their friendship:
1. Regina Kills Graham
When they first met, Emma and Regina started off on the wrong foot and naturally started off as enemies. In the Season 1 episode, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter,” Regina taps into her evil side and ruins Emma and Graham's tender moment by crushing his heart and killing him.
2. Regina and Emma Combine Their Magic
Regina and Emma join forces and combine their magic in the Season 2 finale, “And Straight on Til Morning.” When Regina admits she's not powerful enough to save the town from destruction, Emma suggests they combine their magic.
3. Regina Teaches Emma Magic
Emma asks Regina to teach her to use magic so she can help defeat Zelena (Rebecca Mader) in Season 3. Taking Emma under her wing, Regina challenges her, successfully pushing Emma to use her inner magic.
4. Regina Makes a Shocking Discovery
In the Season 3 episode, “There’s No Place Like Home,” a time-traveling Emma accidentally brings back a woman who turns out to be Robin Hood’s (Sean Maguire) long-lost wife Marian, ruining Regina’s happy ending. When Regina learns Marian’s identity, she is furious at Emma, causing a rift in their budding friendship.
5. Emma Becomes the Dark One
In the Season 4 finale, Emma sacrifices herself to the darkness to save Regina. She acknowledges that Regina has worked too hard to have her happiness destroyed and Emma allows the darkness to take her instead, becoming the Dark One.
6. Regina Steps Forward as Savior
In the Season 5 episode, “The Price,” Regina comes forward as the savior, covering for Emma.
7. Emma Uses Dark Magic
When Regina's magic can't save a fatally injured Robin, she convinces Emma to use her dark magic. Emma is visibly terrified to use her magic, but does so in order to save Regina’s love.
