In 2014 Michigan Governor Snyder appointed an emergency manager and made a catastrophic decision to implement a money saving plan to draw drinking water, for Flint, from the Flint River without properly treating the water. This resulted in a city wide contamination of the water supply. Flint Mayor Karen Weaver appeared on "The View" to discuss her major concern about lead poisoning, resulting from the contamination, and its damaging and irreversible affects. She feels this is a race and class issue. Had this been a different community, with more money and political clout, they would not have had this issue.
The water crisis in Flint has been going on for almost two years. Residents knew something was wrong right after Governor Snyder appointed the emergency manager and switched the water supply source but no one listened to their cries. The Governor has since apologized. Some are calling for his resignation. Mayor Weaver agrees we need to find out who was responsible and that there needs to be accountability. She states, "We didn’t deserve what happened to us in the city of Flint.”
Cher joins the conversation on "The View" and weighs in on the Flint water crisis. Cher is active and outspoken about the water crisis because she knows what it's like to be poor and not have a voice. It keeps people in the community from gaining the equality they deserve. Mayor Weaver also discusses how the city will need to handle the long lasting effects of this crisis. The families will need financial support for medical and special education services. Michael Moore also discussed the water contamination crisis in Flint, Michigan on "The View." He agrees with the Flint Mayor that this would not have happened in a rich white community.
