'American Born Chinese' has a Special White House Screening!

On May 8, 2023, President Biden hosted a special screening of the highly anticipated Disney+ Original series "American Born Chinese," as part of the largest Asian American Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month celebration at the White House, in partnership with TAAF (The Asian American Foundation). The series from Disney Branded Television and produced by 20th Television will premiere with all episodes on May 24 on Disney+.

President Biden and Academy Award-winning actor Ke Huy Quan kicked off the screening event with inspiring remarks. In talking about the importance of "American Born Chinese" and celebrating AANHPI Heritage Month, Quan said, "This is a show about that very crossroads — between storybook fantasy and real-world struggle. It tells the tale of an immigrant family, with an American son, finding their way, forging their own path, and dealing with all the highs and lows of that difficult journey. It's about the blending of cultures, influences, and values into a new American identity. And most of all … it's about family."

Additionally, Biden commented on the evening, saying, "Nights like these are a reminder of the power of stories."

Also in attendance were series stars Ben Wang, Yeo Yann Yann, Chin Han, Daniel Wu,  Jimmy Liu and Sydney Taylor, as well as the series' creative team, including executive producer and author of the graphic novel Gene Luen Yang, executive producer and director Destin Daniel Cretton, series creator and showrunner Kelvin Yu, and executive producers  Melvin Mar, Jake Kasdan and Erin O'Malley. Peyton Elizabeth Lee and Alex Aiono, stars of the Disney+ Original series "Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.," were also among the many distinguished guests.

Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, "American Born Chinese" chronicles the trials and tribulations of a regular American teenager whose life is forever changed when he befriends the son of a mythological god. This is the story of a young man's battle for his own identity, told through family, comedy and action-packed kung fu.
