Modern Family Series Finale Recap: How Did Season 11 End?

It's the end of an era here as we bring you the Modern Family finale recap here on ABC. A lot of characters made some big changes—and no matter what, they'll all get through it just like they always have: by relying on each other. So how did Modern Family end? Everyone's Moving Out of the Dunphy House

With a full house, Phil and Claire have taken to sleeping in the RV in the driveway, and they've had enough: They say someone has to move out. Alex finds out her new job with Dr. Arvin Fennerman will be moving to Switzerland, and she agrees to do it. And she thinks there's a chance that she and Arvin might become romantically entwined (thanks to Haley's read on the situation), so they take steps now to be sure everything will be professional going forward:

Then Phil and Claire find out that Mitchell and Cam might be moving to Missouri, because Cam got the college football coaching job. Suddenly, Phil and Claire realize they have to cherish the moments they have with everyone in the house. But Is it too late?

Big Jobs Mean Big Changes

Meanwhile, Gloria is worried that she's working too much with her real estate business, and that she's not needed around the house anymore. But Jay sets her straight and tells her to pursue her dreams:

Mitchell isn't excited about moving to Missouri. But he knows it's big for Cam, and he's willing to take the plunge:

It's nice to see Sal (guest star Elizabeth Banks) one last time, too.

Looking Back through the Years

When Jay arrives to say goodbye to Mitch and Cam as they get ready to head to the airport, he has a moment to reflect on everything his family has shared over the years:

Claire and Mitchell also realize they're not going to be able to see each other as often...and also that Mitchell still kind of resents that Claire quit ice skating back in their youth because that meant they didn't get to soar to the same heights together as a unit. So, as every good sibling would, Claire sets out to steal their ice skating trophy from the local rink so Mitchell can have it as a memento of their time together—and then they relive the moment:

The Final Scene of Modern Family

After all is said and done and it's time for the real goodbyes, the family goes about it like they always have: with a family photo. Here's the emotional series ending of Modern Family:
