Whoopi Responds to Kelly Osbourne Backlash on "The View"
On the August 5th, 2015 episode of "The View" the co-hosts explain how Kelly Osbourne made a mistake when speaking about Donald Trump on the Tuesday August 4th, 2015 episode of the show. Watch the video of the Hot Topic below:
During a Hot Topics discussion about Donald Trump and the absurdity of his claims Black and Latino voters love him, Kelly pointed out Trump is alienating many people. Some of whom may even work for him. However, her comment came out in a manner deemed by many as racist.
Kelly apologized on Facebook saying, "I should have known better as I was on The View and it was live. I’ve learned a very valuable lesson. It is my hope that this situation will open up a conversation about immigration and the Latin community as a whole." Kelly's full apology can be seen on Facebook by clicking here.
Although she gave a public apology, Kelly has continued to receive a lot of backlash and "The View" co-hosts came to her defense during Hot Topics on the August 5th, 2015 show. As seen in the video above, Whoopi felt Kelly's intent was not to be racist and they have forgiven her as she was just trying to say Donald Trump's comments on immigration hurts some of the people he may count on. Whoopi continued to say there is a difference between a racist statement and a racist person and Kelly is not racist. Raven-Symone also defended her friend Kelly stating, “I’m best friends with Kelly…I don’t think she’d be a racist if she was friends with me.” Rosie Perez also weighed in via Twitter saying to Kelly, "I took your point wrong. My Bad. You're heart is so pure and righteous. I adore you."
Whoopi also pointed out how this situation was similar to that of former co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck. Last week on the July 29th, 2015 show Whoopi defended Elisabeth's right to ask questions about the Sandra Bland investigation without being labeled racist. The co-hosts know in there hearts that Kelly Osbourne is not racist. Nicolle Wallace feels a lesson has been learned and thinks it would be a game changer, in politics, if voters could forgive as quickly those they are ideologically opposed to for similar statements.
