"Original is the first word that came to mind when I caught this young Alabama group. The Bear’s combination of catchy tunes, indie rock sensibilities and the twang of a pedal steel guitar create an original and appealing sound, making them definitely a band to watch." - Neil Ferguson (No Depression)
The Bear is the brainchild of singer/songwriters Louisa Murray and Nathan Pitts. Based in the Shoals area of Alabama, the couple began The Bear in 2008 as a duo, but gradually added an ensemble of multi-instrumentalists. The result is a widely varied sound that is difficult to pigeonhole but consistently surprising and exciting. The band’s sophomore album, Overseas Then Under, was recorded primarily in the band’s home, giving them unprecedented freedom to experiment and explore new sonic landscapes. The result is a striking blend of genres and styles, but the two singers’ voices and songs remain firmly at the center, exploring Southern tales that range from childlike innocence to murderous disillusionment.
