"Jimmy Carter: A Full Life - A Special Edition of 20/20" reflects on the extraordinary life of the 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter (1924-2024). On the evening of his death at 100 years old, the special reports on his unlikely rise to the presidency as well as his legacy of peacemaking and its impact long after his time in office. "20/20" has gone back into the ABC News archives to feature extensive footage from President Carter's early life and interviews with former "20/20" anchor Barbara Walters who interviewed President Carter and his wife, First Lady Rosalynn Carter, in the White House. Additional archival interviews include former ABC News anchor Sam Donaldson who covered President Carter's presidential campaign and "Good Morning America" anchor George Stephanopoulos' many interviews with the Carters conducted over the years. 

The one-hour special traces President Carter's roots back to his humble beginnings selling boiled peanuts on the main street of his small hometown of Plains, Georgia; and follows his career in the Navy; his rise to governor of Georgia; and, eventually, to the highest office in the country, the presidency. Tonight's special edition of "20/20" also chronicles the amazing love story between President Carter and his hometown sweetheart, Rosalynn Carter, and their partnership that spanned more than seven decades. Their legacy, the Carter Center, has been the vehicle for extraordinary philanthropy, helping eradicate diseases, and working for peace all over the world.   

  

Through additional interviews with family, friends, colleagues, reporters and historians, "20/20" remembers some of President Carter's greatest triumphs, including brokering peace between Egypt and Israel; winning the Nobel Peace Prize; and, through the Carter Center, spearheading the near eradication of Guinea worm disease from Africa; and reflects on some of his life's biggest challenges. Interviews include President Carter's grandson Jason Carter and niece Kim Carter Fuller; Jill Stuckey, friend of the Carters and superintendent of Jimmy Carter National Historical Park; Andrew Young, former United Nations Ambassador; Paige Alexander, CEO of The Carter Center; Dr. Meredith Evans, director of the Carter Presidential Library and Museum; and many more including "20/20" co-anchor Deborah Roberts, ABC News senior national correspondent Steve Osunsami who shares his personal memories of time spent with the Carters, as well as "Nightline" co-anchor Byron Pitts. "Jimmy Carter: A Full Life - A Special Edition of 20/20" airs Sunday, Dec. 29 (10:01-11:00 p.m. EST), on ABC, next day on Hulu
