It's been over three decades since moviegoers hitched a ride for the cinematic adrenaline rush that comes with 1994's Speed. It's a pulse-pounding, non-stop detour through busy city streets, unfinished freeways and an impromptu airport run. Now you can catch the hit movie Sunday, July 19 8:30/7:30c on ABC.
Here's the story. LAPD officer Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves) thwarts a harrowing elevator hostage crisis. Then he shoots his partner, Harry (Jeff Daniels). It's all good. It was in an attempt to capture mad bomber Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper). Things didn't work out.
A short time later, the grudge-holding Payne plants a bomb on a city bus which goes boom if it drops below 50 miles per hour. That's pretty daunting considering LA traffic. Jack hops on board the bus to save the unsuspecting passengers. When the driver is shot, wildcat Annie Porter (Sandra Bullock) takes the wheel of this really big Pinto.
The action never stops as the bus rips through city streets missing pretty much every stop on its route. It also jumps a fairly-gapping unfinished section of freeway near the airport. Stellar shocks and a good suspension (of disbelief) help make this a memorable movie moment. But wait… there's more. A lot more!
Speed is a total thrill ride from start to finish. Logic flies out the bus window during this over-the-top action flick, but you simply don't care because it's just so much fun. The chemistry between Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock is endearing, natural and funny. You gotta love when Annie tells Jack that the reason she's taking the bus is because her driver's license has been suspended for speeding.
If it's been a while since you've seen Speed, maybe it's time to give it another watch. If you've never seen this classic summer blockbuster, buckle up. It's a total thrill ride from start to finish. Watch Speed Sunday, July 19 8:30/7:30c on ABC and stream it right here on ABC.com.
