There's a memorable scene in "While You Were Sleeping" that has nothing to do with the plot. A young kid delivers the morning newspapers by heaving them onto porches over snow-covered lawns. Then… THWOMP! The paperboy's bike tires slide on the ice. The kids wipes out so hilariously that you may miss the next few scenes due to unrelenting laughter. Lucy (Sandra Bullock) is a lonely Chicago transit worker with a major crush on Peter (Peter Gallagher), a handsome commuter who barely knows she exists. It's Christmastime when Peter falls onto the train tracks. Lucy saves his life and one innocent misunderstanding suddenly has everyone believing she's his fiancée. One problem. Peter is unconscious and Lucy has no idea how to explain any of this.
Lucy, who has spent so much of her life feeling alone, can't help falling for Peter's lovable, chaotic family as she's pulled into their holiday celebrations. But Peter's charming and suspicious brother, Jack (Bill Pullman), isn't buying the engagement story. Nevertheless, as he and Lucy get to know each other, they head down a road that every romantic can see coming a mile away. But who cares?
"While You Were Sleeping" has everything you want from a cozy holiday comedy. It's funny, warm, and completely rewatchable. It's also a sweet reminder that the person you think you've been waiting for may not be the one who was meant to find you in the end.
