Rami Malek Wins the 2019 Oscar for Actor in a Leading Role in BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Rami Malek is the 2019 Oscar winner for ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE! Congratulations to Rami Malek on his first Oscar nomination and win for his portrayal of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY. Other nominees for ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE included Christian Bale in VICE, Bradley Cooper in A STAR IS BORN, Willem Dafoe in AT ETERNITY'S GATE, and Viggo Mortensen in GREEN BOOK.

In his acceptance speech, Rami Malek breathlessly thanked his family, noting that while his father didn't get to see him up on the Oscars stage, "I think he's looking down on me right now so this is a monumental moment." In addition to thanking his family, Malek gave a sweet shout-out to his girlfriend and BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY costar Lucy Boynton, who portrayed Freddie Mercury's close friend and partner Mary Austin. "Lucy Boynton, you're the heart of this film," he declared. "You're beyond immensely talented. You have captured my heart." The pair met and began dating on the set of the film.

Rami Malek portrays Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the rock band Queen, who strives to maintain his dedication to his music despite his sometimes tumultuous private life. Malek did provide his own vocals for the part, which were blended together in the final cut with master tracks of Freddie Mercury from studio recordings, mashed together with Canadian rock singer Marc Martel.
