America's oldest ice cream company is rich in flavor and history
After 125 years in the same space at Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market -and even more years in business - Bassetts Ice Cream is America's oldest ice cream company. Founded in 1861, they are now in the sixth generation of their family-owned business. Lewis Dubois Bassett, a Quaker schoolteacher, started making his ice cream on his farming Salem, New Jersey and would bring it into Philadelphia to sell at farmer's markets. When Reading Terminal Market opened in 1892, Bassetts signed a lease and has been there ever since. They are the last remaining original merchant at the market.
