Celebrating 100 years of women's suffrage: The fight for equality continues
August 18th is the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. While the 19th prevented the U.S. government from discriminating against U.S. citizens based on sex, there was still a fight to be fought for women of color. Today, the direct descendants of the suffragettes who fought for the 19th 100 years ago are still fighting for equality. Liza Mickens is the direct descendent of Maggie L. Walker, a prominent suffragette who fought for the 19th Amendment and went on to be a leading face of voter registration, fighting tirelessly to help African Americans achieve economic and social independence. Today, Liza carries on the legacy of her ancestor.
