Chaser Biography
Legendary game show contestant, actor and producer Brad Rutter grew up watching "Jeopardy!" every night with his parents in his hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. By the time he was in high school, he was beating the contestants from his living room while studying for quiz bowl.
Rutter made his first "Jeopardy!" appearance while he was still a student at Johns Hopkins University. He walked away after winning five straight games with a total of $55,102 and two Chevrolet Camaros. This five-day champion title secured him a spot in the 2001 Tournament of Champions, which he also won handily. Rutter went on to snag the main prizes in the 2002 Million Dollar Masters Tournament, the 2005 Ultimate Tournament of Champions, the 2014 Battle of the Decades Tournament and the 2019 "Jeopardy!" All-Star Games.
In 2011, Rutter lost while facing off against IBM computer program Watson in a "man versus machine" exhibition match. Rutter donated $100,000 of his winnings from the match to the Lancaster County Community Foundation.
He also competed in the highly rated ABC primetime special tournament "Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time" in 2020.
Rutter currently stars in the ABC quiz show "The Chase" along with fellow "Jeopardy!" GOAT James Holzhauer. He returns for a third season to compete against contestants as a ruthless Chaser.
Rutter is also a huge fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies. When stumped by the final "Jeopardy!" question on night three of the GOAT (2020) tournament, he wrote in the response "Eagles Super Bowl LII Champs" and wagered $4,133, a nod to the final score of the game, 41-33.
With a total of over $5 million in winnings, Rutter has won more money than any contestant in "Jeopardy!" history.
