DWTS 2019 Results: Week 2 - First Elimination

The tension was high in the ballroom as Dancing with the Stars 2019 opened its viewer vote for week two and the stars and their pro dance partners faced the first elimination of the season. Judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli, and Carrie Ann Inaba put the entire cast on notice last week that they'd be giving serious and detailed critiques this season, and they didn't disappoint this week. With the scores tightly packed from Week One and the likes of TV icon James Van Der Beek and Bachelorette Hannah Brown leading the pack, what were the results for week two of Dancing with the Stars 2019? Keep scrolling for the full recap!

James Van Der Beek & Emma
Week one's high-scoring couple, James Van Der Beek and Emma Slater, opened the show with a fast and fun cha-cha to Lionel Richie's classic "Dancing on the Ceiling." Bruno exclaimed that "James knows how to open big" and Carrie Ann said he was "on fire," but Len felt like there were a few too many "gimmicks."

Bruno – 7; Len – 6; Carrie Ann – 7; TOTAL: 20 (41 combined weeks 1 & 2)

Sailor Brinkley-Cook & Val
Sailor Brinkley-Cook wowed the audience and viewers at home in week one when she stepped in at the last minute for her injured mother, Christie Brinkley, and performed admirably with only a few days' rehearsal time. This week, Sailor and pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy had proper time to practice for their rumba, but it was still pretty short notice to perform such a sensual dance. Len told Sailor she had "a really nice performance," but all three judges echoed Bruno's advice that Sailor's "intention has to be much, much stronger."

Ray Lewis & Cheryl
Football legend Ray Lewis came out fiery in week one with partner Cheryl Burke, but this week, Ray had to get light on his feet for a foxtrot to Earth, Wind & Fire's classic "September." Unfortunately, that proved to be too big a challenge at this stage of the competition. Carrie Ann admitted Ray is "enjoyable to watch," but "there were tons of mistakes" and Len echoed that "it was flat-footed."

Ally Brooke & Sasha
"Potential" was the word the judges had for Ally Brooke and her pro partner Sasha Farber in week one, but would they see it begin to develop in week two? Ally faced online bullying in the past for her dancing with Fifth Harmony, and those doubts lingered as Ally entered the competition, but the judges were far more certain. Bruno declared, "you can dance, period" and Carrie Ann echoed "you are a dancer."

Mary Wilson & Brandon
Music legend Mary Wilson had Len jealous of her moves at their shared age of 75-years-old last week, but this week she had to educate her pro dancer partner Brandon Anderson on Aretha Franklin as well as learn a killer cha-cha. Bruno called their performance "simple, effective, nicely presented" and Carrie Ann declared that Mary "owns the room." That said, their scores didn't improve week-over-week.

Lauren Alaina & Gleb
Country star Lauren Alaina brought some sultry down-home charm last week with pro partner Gleb Savchenko, but Len called them out for not enough content, even though they scored in the top three. This week, Bruno "loved it" and called their routine a "strong and focused performance," but Carrie Ann commented that Lauren's "shoulders were a little high." Len was once again disappointed that there wasn't more pasodoble content in the choreography.

Bruno – 7; Len – 6; Carrie Ann – 6; TOTAL: 19 (38 combined weeks 1 & 2)

Sean Spicer & Lindsay
Week one was a little rough for former White House press secretary Sean Spicer and pro partner Lindsay Arnold, sitting just one point up from bottom of the leaderboard. While the scores didn't show much of a lift, all three judges agreed with Len's comment, "better than last week." Bruno added, "I actually have to admit, it looked like a tango," and Carrie Ann called it "super-much-improved."

Karamo & Jenna
The judges were disappointed in DWTS superfan Karamo's week one performance with pro partner Jenna Johnson, so he called in some support from his fiancé and his future mother-in-law, Carol, a former professional dancer and ballroom instructor. The extra coaching paid off with Bruno declaring, "everyone is going crazy for Karamo" and Carrie Ann shouting "that's the pizzazz I wanted to see from you!" But Len wasn't particularly impressed—or intimidated by Carol—saying he "wasn't overstruck on it" and echoing the other judges' critique that "body contact" wasn't what it needed to be.

Kate Flannery & Pasha
The Office's Kate Flannery and pro partner Pasha Pashkov definitely had plenty of energy last week, but the judges were looking for some more refinement. And that's exactly what they brought with their sleek and classy foxtrot. Len seemed particularly pleased saying, "the bottom line is, you did a wonderful, wonderful dance," and Bruno exclaimed "Houston to Kate, we have lift-off!"

Kel Mitchell & Witney
Comedic actor Kel Mitchell was a little out-of-control in week one with pro partner Witney Carson, so would he be able to calm those nerves in week two? Adding to the pressure, Kel's father had brain surgery this past week, so it was hard to concentrate on rehearsals. Len was happy with the performance, saying there was "plenty of rhythm" and "plenty of recognizable steps." Bruno praised the "naturalness" of the performance and Carrie Ann added that there was a lot of "refinement" over last week. Even better, Kel's dad is doing well.

Lamar Odom & Peta
Basketball star Lamar Odom and his pro partner Peta Murgatroyd unfortunately spent week one on the bottom of the leaderboard, no thanks to the staggering 15-inch height difference between the two of them, so this week was about finding some redemption. Len had some kind words for both Lamar and Peta, telling Lamar he seemed "a little bit more confident" and "on the right track" and telling Peta that she is "doing a fantastic job." Even so, with a score of 12, Lamar and Peta once again had the lowest score of the night.

Hannah Brown & Alan
Former Bachelorette Hannah Brown wowed everyone in week one with her debut dance with pro partner Alan Bersten, missing the top of the leaderboard by a single point! This week, they took the top spot with the closing dance of the night, earning not only the first "8" of the season, but the first three "8's!"

First Elimination
With two dances and sets of judges' scores in the books, and America's live vote just closed, it was time to find out who would be the first couple eliminated from the Dancing with the Stars 2019 competition. The bottom two couples of the week based on their combined judges' scores and viewer votes were Ray Lewis & Cheryl and Mary Wilson & Brandon. It came down to the judges to choose which couple to save with Carrie Ann choosing Mary & Brandon, Bruno choosing Ray & Cheryl, and Len's deciding vote going to Ray & Cheryl as well. That means it was time for Mary Wilson and Brandon Anderson to take a final bow in the ballroom.
