Remember the first time we ever heard Ellis Grey tell Meredith that the carousel never stops turning? Meredith certainly does.
4. "You are no more than ordinary. What happened to you?"
In one of the most unforgettable (and gut-wrenching) mother/daughter moments, Meredith's mom is suddenly lucid after five years of Alzheimer's. When Ellis discovers that Meredith is happy and in love, she's surprisingly horrified. She didn't raise her daughter to be ordinary.
3. "That man makes me purr like a kitten."
In Season 2, Ellis shocks her daughter when she starts talking about her active sex life. TMI for any daughter, right? Meredith is even more surprised when she discovers Ellis once had an affair. Little does she know it was with one Richard Webber...
2. "You did the best you could."
During the Season 3 episode, "Staring at the Sun," Meredith is forced to tell Ellis that Richard will no longer be visiting her. He wants to make his marriage work with Adele. Meredith's mom is stuck in the past as she absorbs the information.

While Meredith's life hangs in the balance after drowning in Season 3, she sees her mother. Ellis tells Meredith she's anything but ordinary and that she needs to run back. We then see Derek and Cristina work to save Meredith's life. Mer takes her mother's advice and her heart starts beating again. Unfortunately, this extraordinary moment is bittersweet. We soon learn Ellis Grey has died.
