Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Meredith Reveals Penny Killed Derek
For highlights from the Season 12 episode "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," here's your Grey's Anatomy recap. On last week's episode, "Old Time Rock and Roll," Maggie, Meredith, and Amelia are already on their way to spectacularly failing at throwing a dinner party. Karev actually has to remind them they are throwing it! Maggie, the designated cook, is too busy dealing with the fallout from her hookup with the intern, Andrew, to make any food. In the midst of trying to get the party going, Meredith answers the door for Callie and Callie's new girlfriend. She's stunned when she locks eyes with Penny, the doctor who let Derek die. Meredith is immediately taken back to that terrible night, and as the screen fades to black, there's no doubt the sisters are about to throw the dinner party from hell. Episode 5 picks up right where last week ended. Meredith is stricken, but regains her wits enough to invite Callie and Penny inside. She pretends everything is fine, but Alex knows something is wrong with his friend. How long can Meredith keep her composure before she explodes? Keep reading to find out what happened in the October 22, 2015 episode, Grey's Anatomy Season 12, Episode 5, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner."
Perfect Penny Killed Derek
From the moment Meredith opens the door and recognizes Callie's new girlfriend, she's been struggling to keep her composure and pretend she doesn't know Penny. When the dinner conversation turns to Penny's job, she tells everyone she's a doctor, but doesn't elaborate. But when Bailey realizes Penny is Penelope Blake, their new resident transfer, Meredith can't keep quiet any longer: "She was at Dillard. Dillard Medical Center [...] It's where Derek died. Isn't that right, Penny?" Everyone is stunned into silence. "Perfect Penny killed my husband," Meredith announces bitterly, before leaving the room.
Amelia Shows Penny No Mercy
Amelia is shocked when Meredith spills the beans about Penny's identity. She's still upset she didn't get to see Derek before he died. She peppers Penny with questions, demanding to know exactly how he died, and what his last words were. Callie, still trying to process the situation herself, tells her it's enough, but Amelia doesn't want to stop. "Did he say anything to you? Before you killed him?" she asks angrily, as Penny tries to walk away. Callie slams her fist on the table. "That's enough!" she says.
Meredith's Rage Explodes
Amelia is wallowing in anger and self-pity, and when Meredith refuses to discuss the Penny situation, Amelia lashes out at her. It's the last straw for Meredith, who's already been through the emotional wringer. She explodes with rage and screams at Amelia. Owen quickly ushers Amelia out of the room.
Jackson Is Nice to April
For the first time since April returned from the Middle East, Jackson treats her like April. While sharing dish duty after the world's worst dinner party ends, she expresses empathy for Penny, because she too once made a stupid mistake that killed a patient. Jackson protests, telling her it was a mistake, and things like that are never just one person's fault. But April replies, "Some things are just your fault. Some things you screw up, and you can't take back, no matter how hard you try. Some things you pay for, the rest of your life." April knows she screwed up with Jackson, and now seems resigned to the consequences. The two share a moment. Is there a glimmer of hope for these two?
Penny Will Never Forget Derek
Meredith closes the door after Alex, thinking he's the last guest to leave. But the night isn't over just yet. Penny walks into the foyer, and is as shocked to see Meredith as Meredith is to see her. She tells Meredith she's not going to take the job at Grey Sloan Memorial, and Meredith will never have to see her again. But in the doorway, Penny pauses. She wants Meredith to know that she heard what Meredith said to her the night Derek died. She hasn't forgotten Derek, and she never will. "I think about that night, about him, every day," Penny says solemnly. Begrudgingly, Meredith responds, "I'll see you Monday. Don't be late," granting Penny permission to stay.
