Grey’s Anatomy Recap: Meredith Struggles to Work with Penny

For highlights from the Season 12 episode "The Me Nobody Knows," here's your Grey's Anatomy recap. On last week's episode, "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," Meredith, Amelia, and Maggie invited everyone over to their house for a dinner party. It quickly turned into the dinner party from hell when Callie shows up with her new girlfriend, Penny, who Meredith immediately recognized as the doctor who killed Derek. She tries to keep her composure, but can't keep quiet when Bailey realizes Penny is the new transfer resident at Grey Sloan Memorial. Everyone, including Callie, is stunned. Amelia is furious that Meredith didn't tell her immediately, and Meredith loses it. After everyone else is gone, Penny tells Meredith she'll never forget Derek, and she won't be taking the job at Grey Sloan. Something Penny says strikes a chord with Mer, and she tells Penny she'll see her Monday.

In Episode 6, Meredith regrets her decision almost immediately when she arrives at work and finds out Blake has been assigned to her service. Bailey offers her an out, but Meredith declines. She wants to do the right thing, and rise above, but the new resident's frequent mistakes stretch her patience to the limit. Eventually, fed up, she throws Penny off her service, angering both Dr. Webber and Callie. Meanwhile, April brings a colleague from her time in the Middle East, Dr. Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), and Kamal, a young boy from Jordan with Ollier's disease, to the hospital so Jackson can fix Kamal's hands. But when they arrive, Jackson realizes April deceived him about Kamal's case, and he's furious. And when an old friend of Webber's ends up in the ER as Maggie's patient, Richard wrestles with admitting he cheated on Adele and has a daughter. Keep reading for more from the November 5, 2015 episode, Grey's Anatomy Season 12, Episode 6, "The Me Nobody Knows."

Meredith Tries to Rise Above

When Penny Blake is assigned to Meredith's service on the new resident's first day, Meredith decides to try and be mature about it. But Amelia, who hasn't spoken to her since the dinner party debacle, is furious when she finds out. Meredith explains she's trying to rise above, and Amelia should too. "No, you should have ended it. That night!" Amelia snaps at her.

Webber Knew Penny Killed Derek

After a stressful day trying to work with Blake, Meredith gets frustrated and kicks Blake off her service. Webber chastises her for "hazing" Blake instead of teaching her, and disagrees with Meredith's statement that Penny might not belong in their program, revealing he'd checked her references personally before hiring her. Meredith realizes he was fully aware of Penny's role in Derek's death. Webber tells her that Blake was an excellent candidate, and the only reason NOT to hire her was Meredith. "And you didn't find that reason enough," Meredith says coldly, before walking away.

Meredith Needs Derek's Advice

Alex is surprised to find Meredith in the chapel. "Since when do you pray?" he asks her. "I'm not," she says. "I'm talking to Derek." Mer tells Alex she's tried to rise, and tried to teach Blake, but she doesn't think she can. "I thought he might know what I'm supposed to do with her, why she's here. I thought maybe he could tell me," she explains.

Jackson Is the Guy

April and a colleague she met while working in the Middle East, Dr. Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), bring Kamal, a young boy from Jordan with a very advanced case of Ollier's disease, to Grey Sloan for surgery. April had arranged for Jackson to perform the operation, but she purposely misled him about how bad Kamal's case was. He was furious about the position she put him in, but eventually decided to attempt the impossible, because it meant so much to April. With Callie's help, Jackson manages to perform the surgery with an amazing level of success. By the end of the episode, Jackson's heart seems to be thawing toward April.

Callie and Penny Aren't Over

Callie tells Penny she stood up for her with Meredith, as she should have done at the dinner party. She says Blake is a surgeon, like all of them, and surgeons make mistakes. "We need to be forgiven. You need to be forgiven." Suddenly, Penny gets a message from Dr. Grey. Meredith wants Penny back on her service all week! Maybe taking the job at Grey Sloan wasn't such a big mistake after all.
